"Imagination is more important than knowledge"
Albert Einstein, Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post, October 26, 1929.
"Discovering New Worlds identified in past centuries by geographers and historians is closed, the new New Worlds arisen in a few decades as a result of advances in science, technology, conqueror of economism just beginning. They are created around us … We are both natives – we belong to them – and "foreigners" – we are often disoriented us to do well. "
G. Balandier, Le Grand Système, 2001.
The Chair of Research and Training "Modelling of imagination, innovation and creation" was founded in late 2010 for a period of five years by two academic institutions, the School-Tech Telecom Paris and University of Rennes 2. Four industrial partners follow us in this adventure DS, Ubisoft, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Orange, which joined the Bell Labs of Alcatel Lucent and DATAR (Delegation for Territorial Planning and Regional Attractiveness).
The imaginary consists of stories and dynamic world of ever more complex forms. They shape the technical objects in the innovation process. Information technology and communications are well saturated with social representations, fictions and images, producing differentiation or mimicry.
These "technologies of the mind" such as video games, virtual worlds or 3D world, seize the "raw material" of the imaginary, the model and transforms it. Conversely, these are always more imaginary "Technology-" producing an intensification and acceleration of innovation. But deep, acts another temporality, that of social representations that operate over very long periods, such as a memory broadcasts informing imaginary actors and objects.
At the intersection of those trajectories, social and cultural representations are crystallized in the concepts and objects, aggregating themselves into "new worlds" artificial in turn feed on the fantasy novel.
The challenge is to explore the possibility of modeling those worlds. At the same time we want to analyze and formalize the logic and dynamics of the imaginary at the time of the continuous and iterative process of innovation intensive.
The chair aims is to trace the sources unexplored and cleared of innovation, where intermingle and confront the insights, concepts, emotions, dreams and imagination of the various stakeholders, including developers and users …
The purposes of this chair are the basic and applied research, the experimentation and training on the imaginary and the decryption of the new industrial forms.
The chair is positioned well on the three strategic research, industry and training. It is based on multidisciplinary work and uses sound methodologies: history of technology, recreation 3D modeling cognitive and emotional…
The chair invites you to travel, even within our fabrications, in the "Amazon of our imaginations." This exploration crystallizes the association of researchers, designers and manufacturers that shape and transform the raw material for imaginary by putting in the service of technical and cultural innovation.
